Have two 1985 25 HP Merc pull-start motors. One is short-shaft and the other is a longer shaft.
I need the short shaft size on my little 13' Whaler but that motor currently has a sizeable compression varible between cylinders and the longer shaft's cylinder compression is fine.
Question: All things else being equal... is it easier to swap power heads or lower units to get the "better" engine sized to the "short-shaft" I need?
Both of these motors have been in salt water so I'm expecting problems with bolts. I'm just concerned about which swap option is the least involved for me as a novice to this type of swapping. (Is there a best pre-treatment for breaking loose the bolts and housing pieces?)
Any advice, guidance, and counselling would be greatly appreciated....
