85 or 86 Evinrude 4.5 runs then quits after a few minutes

Help-I'm a newbie boatowner and I recently got a an 85 or 86 used Evinrude 4.5 outboard to push a small jon-boat. Got the boat in water yesterday and started out great ran for about 15 min stoped to fish for a bit. Move to next spot engine is running like a charm. Start to head in engine dies after about 1 min or so, but will crank back up after sitting for a bit. So we limp back made a phone call to a buddy and realized I had made a roolie mistake (didn't have the vent cap open on the gas tank ) of course relized after back at ramp. Get home decide to test engine in garbage can with vent open run again like a charm for about 10 min. Go out today to test again in garbage can to make sure all was well and It would run for a few bit then all of a sudden die(vent is open) but cranks back up after priming the bulb and pulling choke out. I have no idea what the problem could be and am looking for a few good suggestions. When the engine is on it runs great but seems to like to turn off on me-Help-Thanks in advance

When it quits, do you have spark? If so, good.<br /><br />If spark is OK, it's time to thoroughly dismantle and clean the carburetor. Your having to choke a warm engine, is the key indicator.

might check to see if the bulb on the fuel line is staying hard.it could be a bad or weak fuel pump.check the fuel filter(screen)on side of fuel pump

When was the last time it had a new impeller, Stalker? They sometimes quit without seizing when overheated.

Check your primer bulb. Sometimes the cage that holds the BB that prevents gass from flowing back into the tank breaks. The BB then lodges in the fuel hose and cuts off fuel flow. To check empty bulb and shake. If you feel the BB rattling all over the place you need a new $5.00 bulb. Good luck!
