I have an 89 Bayliner "L" drive that sat in the garage all winter until today. Because it is hard to start after so long, I pulled the plugs, dried them off, squirted WD-40 in, then just one shot of starting fluid before putting the plugs back in. The motor started, ran 15 seconds then seized up. (It was not running fast when it happened). It sounded like some of the rings broke, then jammed the cylinders. I realize the motor will have to be taken apart to be fixed, but I wonder if new rings can be put in without tearing the motor completely apart. I have a friend who is quite mechanical who can help. The boat repair shops are all swamped as usual.

fairweatherboater,

you didnt run it out of water if so that will seize your engine! and it sounds like your engine needs the carburater tooken off and cleaned
hope this helps and to change the rings you will have to take the whole cranckcase, connecting rod, and piston out i know it sounds like a lot of work but you cant drive an engine with blown rings

Get yourself a manual, and begin to tear it down. Inspect the damage and make sure thats what needs to be done before buying any parts.

Start by looking in the spark plug holes, this may confirm your diagnosis.
