Re: 85hp chysler/how to set timing?
That's real easy---and you don't even need a timing light.
First set the flywheel timing mark (0) to the mark on the pointer (Large scribed line). Now, after loosening the distributor, set the distributor pulley so the curved line matches the flywheel curve and the straight line centered in the curve points directly at the flywheel--either on a tooth or in between. Now the distributor is set to TDC.
Tighten the distributor so that a .010 feeler gauge pointed like a finger in the center of the drive belt deflects the belt about 3/16 inch before it (the feeler) bends. Get the belt too tight and the distributor will bind the linkage, making shifting difficult or impossible. Too loose, and timing will fluctuate a bit.
Top cylinder is #1; Firing order is 1,2,3.
Now, with the ignition on and the plugs out but grounded turn the flywheel by hand until the 36 degree mark on the flywheel comes up to the pointer. You will get a spark somewhere near there. Adjust the distributor link screw until timing mark is 4 degrees past the pointer when the plug sparks. (4 small lines if the pointer has them otherwise, about 1 tooth on the ring gear) This is 32 degrees before TDC---the correct timing. Now, if you push in on the belt, it will deflect the distributor just enough so that it sparks the top plug each push. That's it.
