Bought my new well new to me boat a couple of weeks ago.....When i first took it out on the river it seemed to get right up on plane and go but i think a 85 on such a small boat should be a little better on the top end......To my best guess since i didnt think about a gps it was around 35mph......But it didnt bother me that bad.....The first time i took it to the lake with my father and nephew for fishing it seemed to be a dog and never get on plane the only thing i did differently was buy another portable fuel take and quick connect so i had two 6 gal on board......I switched back to the old tank and it got up on plane but not like it did the first time.......Slow starts and it seemed to be bogging down the wieght was substancially different first time it was me 235lbs my buddy 170lbs and his ol lady at 135lbs total of 540 with no gear.... second time me 235 my ol man 260 and my nephew 85 plus prob 50lbs of tackle 630lbs total but the boat should still run better then that i think.......I changed plugs and my buddy and i went back to the river seemed to be just like it was the first time right on plane but still only 35mph............Yesteraday we decided to take the tube and some friends to the lake......first we tried with 5 people 235 225 205 130 and 135 the boat just blew 5-10mph so we dropped two and went back to tube The boat took forever to plane but was good prob 30mph with the tube being pulled.....grdually as the day went on the boat sucked worse and worse wouldnt get on plane for half mile or so..... So i put it on the trailer discusted.....Any ideas here is what i can think you might ask sincer i read a bunch on this forum but dont know and dont have all the money in the world to throw at it......Prop says 12 5/8 dia and 21c pitch should be 13"x19" as i can find but the thing is if i pull a tape between the farthest points the prop is only 11 1/8 in diameter.....I have suzuki quick disconnects on the tank what came with the boat I only know they are suzuki because i purchased a new one for the new tank....I run 50:1 supertech oil because thats what the previous owner ran... I do not have a tacometer any suggestions on what to run and where to get one.....I put the telltale on the force like it says to in the begining of the threads. When i first changed the plugs only the bottom two were fouled black the top was still shinny gold so i threw the junk champions out and bought autolites now the top seems to be foulded just like the rest.....I have yet to do a compression test since i dropped my gauge and it reads 40lbs consantly a new on is coming this week on the MAC truck!!!I just want this boat to run right since it was just a trial boat to see if we will use it and we love it next year we will sell it a buy and inboard small block chevy so i can work on it and it will pull two tubes Thanks sorry fot the long post but i figure more info better then you asking the ques......:D

I have a 89 same horsepower and it sucks when you get too many people on it . too go tubing use driver and one spotter thats works the best [ i us emy wife and young kid ] you get too many people and it is haed too plane out i even bought a jack plate for motor it helps too plane does some good but the main iussue is the weight in boat . All I can say is GO LIGHT IN WEIGHT good luck

Basics.Do a compression test and then a spark test. The plugs burning right?
Some quick connects are junk and will let it suck air(not saying that's your problem).
Do the compression/spark test.Post your results.J

Just off the wall, your packing a lot of big people on a smallish boat. Pulling tubes adds a lot of drag. Even with a perfect compression test, and a dry boat, (no uninvited water), IMHO, your putting a lot of load on an 85hp.

I will try to borrow a compression tester tomorrow because I dont ever know when the Mac guy will show up but in the meantime I dont think 3 people one on the tube especially when it is two 130lb girls and me the 235lb in the boat it should be a dog well atleast it wasnt the first time i took it out.......Is there any other known problems for those force 85 loosing power? It just seems like its boggin not running like a 2 stroke should.....I have found topics on the quick connects, fuel pump, wrong prop ANY SUGGESTIONS ON A TACH SO I CAN GET SOME MORE INFO????????????????

Simple---Even without the weight, you are overpropped. You need a 13 X 19 and with the load you put in the boat, a 13 X 17 prop would be best. Look on ebay, they come up frequently. If you want a new one, Michigan does make them. Look right here on iboats store.

I second that... a 21 is a pretty steep pitch for that boat. If the front is pointing up instead of planing try moving the weight forward until it planes out. It helps sometimes.

SO if i am understanding this correctly a lower pitch changes the "gear ratio" to a lower ratio which means better bottom nend power right...... so more load on the boat the samller the pitch? What about the diameter of the prop how does that affect the gearing? The boat says on the tag 5 people or 725lbs I am not near that but the wieght should effect it that much???? my old boat with a 40 rude on it would pull a skier with 3 people not fast but pull it there is no way a skier could get up on this thing with three people in it something is wrong and the fact that it just got worse???????????

I agree, you need about a 17 pitch prop.

agreed, my 1986 Bayliner w/85 hp has a limit of 5 persons or 750 lbs. You have 5 persons, 930 lbs. it's not going to run like it should. Add to that all the gear, and pulling a tube, you are way over the limit. With that load, don't get caught by the water patrol.....is there a USCG max. capacities decal on your boat?

17p for certain .the diameter is not so critical as long as its in the right ball park .sounds like the previous owner just went out on his own and wanted a quiet ride at about 25 mph....your speed in Kts will be about 80% of twice the pitch ie at present 80% of 40...with the 17p slower BUT HP gives you the speed so if you want to go fast get some more horses.
You can only go so fast or the hazards on a river come at you so fast it becomes dangerous. If you run WOT all the time you will use mega amounts of gas ...you need to throttle back to about 4000 rpm

Yes, I thought it was a post from 2011. Haha sorry guys. On a high note the information is still hood. Some great answers. I read many old posts for the information. I just got a 20 foot bayliner, and. Put my 1976 850 on it. This can be a good ski boat with the right prop, as long as a person does not expect to win any races. :)
