Hello,
I have a 1987 Force 85 hp and I found a used dual piston Power trim & tilt system with brackets that I would like to add to my manual tilt motor. Is this possible?

Thanks

what did it come off of? It is fine if the system came off an 85HP or larger Chrysler or Force engine made before 1992. 1992-1994 may or may not require new stern brackets. white paint 70HP should work but not black or blue paint. anything under 70 just won't fit. It will look close but ... no cigar.

Re: 85hp Force, Adding Power Trim & Tilt

I own an 85 HP Force (1986) w/o it as well.

My plan is to put on the CMC Tilt/Trim unit. It is more expensive to purchase, but a used one can be a gamble, and may cost just as much to get working properly.

Plus I like that it is universal fit, so I could repower to a different outboard all together and it will still work.

Just another option to consider.

I think third party versus factory boils down to how much it costs you to get a good core. The factory system is better but it is not cheaper. The only reason I can think of where a third party might be better is if you have cavitation problems. Since third party system require taking engine off boat and remounting onto a kicker plate the extra space from hull might help with cavitation.

Otherwise, I'd always pick factory. It works better on boat and sells for more when you are finished using it. BUT - - sometimes a good used core is cost prohibitive. Once boating season starts good cores (aka used trim system) go from $150 each to $350 each and motor/pump rebuilds go from $160 to $230 each. Springing $580 at in-season's peak for system plus pump Ay rebuild is probably a bad decision. Springing $310 at off-season low is probably a good investment.

Guess I had read the opposite...that you had to do engine surgery to add the factory one back in, and that both req'd the engine to come off to install either one. I stand corrected! Good to know.

Thanks.

A lot of engines have a little plastic knob that you turn for reverse lock. You need to remove that latch & rod. No other modifications are required. You'll need the thrust plate if the used system doesn't have one (stainless steel plate that keep aluminum swivel bracket from splitting at trim contact point). Otherwise factory trim is a bolt on system.

Thank you everyone for you help. I am in PA so I have quite a bit of time to make a decision and I do agree this is the best time to search for a good deal.

Thanks Again
