I have a 1989 85hp force we just got.I started it on land, started fine and idled in neutral.I went back the next day and I had nothing at the ignition.Took it to the boat ramp and it started. When I went to put it in neutral it died and the ignition did nothing.after lifting the motor it started back up but once I put it back in neutral it just shut off again.Any suggestions?

Re: 85hp force dies in neutral

I am not sure I understand what you are saying. My guess is you are saying when you put the motor in neutral you are not able to engage the starter. However when you tilt the motor then you can engage the starter in neutral.

If this is the case look on the starboard side of the motor. Next to the powerhead you will see linkages that move when you shift to forward, neutral and reverse. There is a small switch that should engage when the motor is in neutral. That switch might be loose or out of adjustment. This switch allows power to go to the starter solinoid so that the starter will spin.

What im saying is I found the problem with thr ignition now the problem is when I put a load on the motor it will shut off when I try to put it back in neutral.runs fine on land but once in the river I can start it with a little throttle ,but when I try to put the shifter back in neutral the engine shuts off.I hope thats alittle better explanation

Re: 85hp force dies in neutral

You will need to do a compression test and a spark test. You are loosing one or more cylinders and the back pressure of being in the river is causing it to die. A first test would be to remove all the spark plugs and look for one or more that are clean. The clean one is your bad cylinder. Put the clean plug in a different cylinder and a dirty one in the cylinder that had the clean plug and see if after running it that one becomes clean.

Also if you run this motor even for a few seconds out of the water without water muffs on it you will fry your water impeller and run a good chance of the motor overheating. Also if you use water muffs at home the bad cylinder will not be noticable until you totally submerge it in water to get the back pressure
