85hp Force,how many poles(Stator)?

Hi, I am new to this group and I hope someone can finally answer my question for me.I have made many post in other forums,e-mailed Overtons,West Marine,Cabellas,Boat Us and I still have not got a answer yet.<br /><br />I am looking to add a Tachometer to 85hp Force (3 cylinder) serial#856X8B but I have been told several different things so far. First I was told it had a generator,then I was told it had a alternator,then a stator (which I have no idea what that is,I am no mechanic). Then I was asked how many poles is on the Stator.<br /><br />Could someone please tell me how many poles is on my stator? I am confused,and all I want is a tachometer <br /><br />Thanks, Randy

This engine not listed on teleflex chart. Look under the flywheel, you may be able to see the stator windings, count the sets of coil windings and X 2 will give you the number of poles.

The Force engines that appeared with Prestolite ign..2 black or blue power packs are 20 pole stators.<br /><br />TMD

Thanks for the quick reply Clanton,Marine Doctor, and Force01<br /><br />I just tried to take the flywheel off but it was snug so I looked under the flywheel and I could see the elec. windings. Force01 you was right it is a 20 pole Sator.<br /><br />Finally a answer to my question At least I finally found the forum where all the experts hang out at!<br /><br />Thank you all for you time.<br /><br />Regards, Randy

Teleflex part number should be 53743P

Don't bother with teleflex use the Faria tachs they at least off a universal with a 20 pole position. The 7000 rpm one is the one you want.Here you go, good luck!
