85hp force motor runs when put in gear shuts off

Well I got my 85hp force motor (1987) to run, and idles fine, but when I put it in gear forward or reverse it shut's off. I drained flushed and refilled the lower unit from the bottom up so there is no air in it. When I drained it there was no trace of water, or shavings. When in neutral prop turns freely. wondering if it is linkage problem, or internal. I did notice that the carb linkage does not move until you are 3/4 the way through forward throttle. maybe stalling out??

here are some pics of my carbs after I rebuilt them I really did not think anything about this, but came across a pic of these carbs on the net and seen this hole is pluged on all three carb when I got engine these hole are open and kits did not give enough welch plugs one short, kit came with 2 little welch plugs, and one silver large on for top. you can see in pics top hole is open. any one know for sure if is supposed to plugged. I did not run engine long at at high idle so should be no damage cyclinder's as it would run lean if getting to much air.

If it idles fine but shuts off when engaged in gear you need to make sure you have the right idle rpm setting. In neutral it should be around 900~1000 RPM; in gear should be around 700~800 idling in water. If you already have these rpm's set and still dies when in gear, double check the settings of the idle mixture screws by starting at least a 1 turn out from fully close for each carb.

well finally had time to get back to this . Rechecked spark first, #3 coil is not getting spark now. switched it to the other cd unit spark's fine. rechecked all wires , and checked all connections, has to be the cd unit. Tested all coils with meter all tested good, not sure on how to test the cd unit. so will be looking for a cd unit, and spare coil to have on hand once bill's get caught up. Was going to sell the boat and motor. now going to keep motor for spare, after getting it to run only paid 200. for boat motor and trailer. The boat need's total retore. Definitly do not have time for this. So going to scrap boat, and trailer next year. so I'll be looking for another bayliner br, or manatee that's turn key and go, so I can get on the water next year.

I do alittle at a time, when I have a little extra cash, does anyone know what color the kill wire is on the switch box 1987 85 force. Found a good deal on ebay a stator, circuit breaker, starter solenoid, and trigger for 75.00. I also got a switch box 55.00. My trigger someone soldered the wires together, and did not tape them up, found another wire that was burned up. So will be replacing that. Hopefully it will help to have extra part's on hand.

I got my part's. I installed the new used trigger, and switch box. the #3 cylinder now fire's. It start's right up. Idles good, put it in gear and it accelerates good this is on land with motor in barrel. I must have the timing close no backfires. I got my timing light out and it is broken, so I will have to borrow one. If the boat would hold water I would take to lake to test it. My cousin talked me into keeping the boat, he's going to help with the restore. I'm good with metal, and engine's, not wood. Now I get to do the boat accy wiring the radio, nav light's, anc light's, and the horn. Everything has to replaced all disconnected, or missing.

I just wanted to thank frank acampora for his help, and his timing video very helpful, and jerryjerry05, and jiggz. and everyone else who has helped with this project. It is now timed correctly was only off a turn and a half. The motor run's great fire's right up and shift's good . I will install a new impeller, and telltale some time this year yet, the water is flowing but I don't know how long ago it has been changed by previos owner. Hopefully it will see some water next year. Thank's again for all your help, steve
