Hello, im really new to outboards. I have experience in small engines, was a crew chief on f15's and done hundreds of small engine rebuilds, but need some advice on a 85hp force. A guy at work gave me a 1991 spectrum bass boat. He said he was on the water and it quit running then he could not restart it. He said he checked compression and #2 cylinder compression was low. So when i got it home i noticed the starter was not engaging, so i bought a new one and did water impeller . Boat fired right up after manually choking it. Fired and started nicely about half dozen times. It sat few days then no start. I ended up checking compression and 1 and 3 are at 120, cylinder 2 was 20. Pulled the head and a ring was broke, cylinder wall looks good, so went to order rings. The boat does not have a model number anymore, and the guy i got it from said it was a 1989. So i got those rings that are for a 3.00 bore. They are wrong had a huge ring gap. I bought some telescopic gauges and checked and looks like the bore is 3.325. I saw somewhere on here that the 1990's had two sizes of rings? So im guessing its a 1990 85hp? Looks also as though 1990 was last year the 85hp was made and then went to 90hp. Does anyone know what size rings this should have and where in the world i could get some? I talked to the nearby shop and they said they refuse to work on the force motors, but if i wait till they are slow in winter they might look at it. Any info is greatly appreciated .

Force 85's came in two batches of year model, 84-86 with the Motorola ignition and then the 84-91 with the Prestolite ignition. But both batches had the same bore and stroke, 3.312 X 2.8. The 90 HP initial one was the 1990A with the same bore/stroke. But the latter 90's 90-99, had 3.375 X 2.8 bore X stroke.

Your measurement seems to indicate the 85's but maybe with some over boring already done. You can tell if the piston is still original by a number stamped on the crown, usually it's "1" meaning it is still original bore size piston.

Thank you, i checked the pistons they do say .020 so looks like i need say 1986 rings .020 over at least. When i hone these does it typically remove more to where i might need .030 oversized? I can always check after just really wanted to order them before , so i could do it all in one shot.

Usually, honing for this particular purpose is only to get rid of the sheen in the cylinder and doesn't affect the boring size at all. Getting rid of the sheen allows for the new rings to seat accordingly against the cylinder wall. I do not believe you will need to oversize beyond 0.020.

Of course, there is also a honing process to increase bore size when a cylinder wall has some pitting or scratch that needs to be smoothened out.
