had a mechanic clean the carbs on my boat. Went to the lake today, it took me half an hour to get the boat started. Once it was running at full throttle, max speed was 10 mph. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Well, not to be politically incorrect BUT The first problem you have is that you let a mechanic work on it. I do not denigrate all mechanics, but I have seen enough that don't know their A** from a hole in the ground. And yet they sound like they know what they are doing!

Assuming it ran well before the mechanic got his hands on it: Any number of things could cause the problem. You need to check that the carbs are opening fully. You need to check that they are properly synchronized with the timing. You need to check that the chokes are closing fully or if it has an enrichment valve, that the valve is opening when you push in on the key. You need to check or replace the fuel pump diaphragm.

You need to check the timing. Now: Cleaning the carbs should not have affected timing but I never assume anything that can be adjusted is adjusted correctly.

Do yourself a favor: Get a Clymers manual and do the work yourself. With the help you can get here at the forum, If you can hold your wee-wee in your hands when you pee, you can do the work

The mixture screw should be at the choke side of the carb, idle adjustment is in with the linkage and should be done with a link and sync

Have you got your manual out to check? that needs to be one of the first things you buy when you get a boat,to help you understand how it affects the motor, not saying that you don't ,but generally a good manual is worth its weight in gold.Next time you can work on the carbs and leave the mechanic out of the picture and save some $$$$$
