85hp johnson tach question

I have a 85hp 1978 johnson..Have never had a working tach..I bought a telflex tach and installed it..I set it for six pole as instructions said and cranked her up tach was working but it was saying I was running 2k..At idle. I ran it on muffs does this sound right or is it SNAFU like normal??Thanks for help

Check that you actually have 12V on the tach's IGN terminal when your ignition is on. Also check you have a good ground connection.<br /><br />Check out:<br /> http://www.tflx.com/PDF/99320.pdf <br />for a few tips. Check out the section Additional Information for Evinrude/Johnson engines.
