85hp vs 115hp

I've got a 1982 TLCNB115, that is a little rough electrically, and probably needs a new set of gaskets. Runs good except at low RPM, possible fuel issues / etc., but just don't like the way it runs under about 2500rpm.

I've also got a 1980 85hp (don't have the exact model #), that just needs carbs rebuilt. The carbs on the 115 are mint, the engines look near identical, and I've checked the parts breakdowns, piston, rods and cranks are the same, but the crankcase is different.

Can I take two here and make one?

How many of the parts are really the same?

Thanks!

Continue checking part numbers, like the carbs!!!.

If you have the resources to check that information then use it instead of asking us to research it for you. We use the same methods to find out what is interchangeable.

More than likely they will have differences in jetting, etc.

I'm sorry, didn't want to inconvenience anyone with researching for me; I thought someone might know off the top of their head. I have been researching, but there is nothing like the voice of experience.

Hope I didn't put anyone to bother :)

Your not bothering anyone, I was just saying, if you have the resources then that's how we would be able to tell for sure what will fit and won't.

Well, I know they will fit, but I guess my question is, do they need to be re-jetted to make the carbs 85hp, or will swapping the carbs make the engine 115?

Lots of interchangeable parts which is why I picked up the engine, just trying to decide whether to make the 85 a 115, or scavenge parts off the 85 to get the 115 where I want it.

The 85 is in better overall shape, but I want the 115hp,... course with gas prices, might opt for saving fuel ;)

Thanks!

You need to run the proper jets for proper engine. 115 jets in a 115 and 85 jets in the 85.

Re: 85hp vs 115hp

I did find that there were significant differences in the porting on the block; the block are different. There are a lot of similarities amongst the v-4's from 1981 and up, but the 1980 and earlier 85's though very similar were different monsters at the block.

I will still make good use of all the interchangeable parts though :)
