Hello,

My dad has an 1964 80 or 85hp westbend not quite sure but has been in his garage since 1968, still looks new. Is this motor worth anything. He gave it to me along time ago but I never did anything with it.

Re: 85hp westbend worth anything

To set a value on something like this leaves so much to opinion. I don't think there is much collector interest is this model right now and I don't see any in the near future. I have been wrong before, this is just my opinion. I also have one of these honeys in my shed. I have helped a few guy's locate parts for their motors. These guys still use their motors semi regularly. You know when ever they feel like fishing or water sking. If a fellow can make them run and not have to dump a whole bunch of money in them I guess it's worth having fun with. The way I see it, if it runs use it. One thing I tend to use as a realsale value indecator is the amount I paid for something to begin with. From your description of your motor, If I were you, I'd find a boat for it and try to wear it out having fun.

Or maybe try eBay. Sometimes somebody is looking for a good old motor for a good old boat. Might be willing to pay well for a clean original finish and low hours. It'd be a tough sell at a garage sale or your newspaper classifieds. Maybe advertise it at http://www.aomci.org/webads.htm
or right here on iboats. I'd think you could get $750 or better if the controls are with it.

The problem with collector value on a motor like that is it's so daggone big! You may find a guy somewhere who had one on this family boat as a child and REALLY wants one to complete an old family heirloom or something, but they're few and far between.

My advice would be to give it to a teenage child/grandchild, nephew/niece, neighbor kid, etc. who you think might be a budding motorhead. Give it with the condition that if they haven't done anything significant with it in a year, you take it back... Be imaginative...

- Scott
