85HP wont move in reverse

I just bought a 24FT pontoon boat. It has a 85HP Force on the back of it. Took it out for the first time last weekend and figured out it wont go in reverse. Runs great in Forward but when you put it in reverse it wont go anywhere. It revs up but never moves the boat. It shook kinda bad to while idleing but i think that is because the prop was bent. Any Idea's?

Thank you, William

Does it "clunk" into reverse like it does into forward?

Disconnect the shift linkage at the motor. Then try shifting it into reverse on the motor itself by hand. If it engages by hand, then it is a linkage problem in your controls. If it does not shift manually, drop the lower unit oil and inspect for shavings, water, rust, etc and report back.

No it dont clunk into reverse. It acts like it just idles in reverse. The motor revs up. When i do it in the parking lot it will spin both ways. But i know the motor has power because it works going forward.

Yea man pull the l/u plug and check for metal. Sounds like you either have a sheared R gear or reverse side of clutch dog is gone. Im voting on the latter of the two.
