I bought a boat that the fuel pump was broken on.
The pump 174434 #174434 on the bottom of it.
Ive tried to match this number and had no success.
Should I continue to locate this part or replace it VRO the non VRO pump? I have been reading about this don't and I dont want to run into the same thing. Also I was looking for a picture of the pump to see if I could ive it but ive had no luck.
Thanks

Re: 86 140 hp Evinrude VRO pump

I just spoke with the ex owner of the boat and he told me that I had to pre-mix the gas. So I guess that means that this pump is not the orig. one.
How can I tell which pump I need? Is there a picture somewhere I can see to match the pump?
motor hasnt moter hasnt run for about 8 months.
Do you have any advice one what to do like changing plugs or anything else I need to know before I fire it up.
appreciated help is much apricated.
Thanks for helping me get back on the water.

Re: 86 140 hp Evinrude VRO pump

Hi Ilive!

I've got the exact same motor.

Re the fuel pump, what muskrat said if you want to start using the oil injection system (do you still have the oil tank and hose?). If you still wish to mix your own oil, you can use fuel pump #438402 and save about $100. Check here at iboats for your pump or sometimes you can get a deal on Ebay. If you go back to oil injection, keep mixing oil until you are sure the injuection system is working. Mark a line on the oil tank. If the oil level drops below the line with some use of the motor, you know it is working.

Re stuff to do before starting it ....your main concern is the gas going bad and gumming up the fuel system if stabilizer wasn't added prior to storage. I'd dump the existing gas and start fresh. For the same reason, you should probably remove each of the four carb bodies, disassemble and use some aerosol carb clener to clean all the passages. While you have the carbs off, install some carb kits (ie. new gaskets, floats, needle valve).

Any idea when the water pump (impeller) was last replaced? They should be changed every 2-3 years as a maintenance item. Finally, lower until oil should be changed every year. If unsure on either of these, I'd do them.

Good luck and enjoy your new motor. They sure suck gas, but are reliable with proper care and have tons of power.

If you haven't got a service manual, get one. Seloc manuals are "ok", but the the original Evinrude factory service manuals are better. I use both since occationally, one explains things better than the other. I believe you can buy Selco manuals here at iboats...www.kencook.com for factory manuals...Ebay if you are willing to wait for one to appear.

Keep an eye out for posts by Dhadley...he is the expert when it comes to these old looper motors.

Cheers.

Almost forgot....just to make sure you do have an '86 140, you might want to post the model # so we can check it for you.
