I have removed the gearcase for waterpump replacement but cannot get the 5"extension to come off the midsection. I managed to drop it down enough to get the shiftrod disconnected but this extension will not come loose. This is a saltwater exposed motor. I should say "saltwater abused".
The drawings I have are not much help as far as the water extension tube and I'm at a loss how this watertube is installed and how it comes apart.
Help guys!
Thanks

Jack,
maybe I misunderstood your problem, but there's
no need to detach the extension section for water pump replacement.
Just disconnect the shift linkage and drop the gear case (the part below the extension).
Are you saying corrosion forced you down this path?

Not sure I understand either. Let me try.

You do need to get the extension off the lower unit to access the water pump. The pump is on the top of the lower unit, 5" below the extension. You need to get the extension off to access the pump housing and its mounting bolts.
The extension should unbolt from the lower unit, just as the lower unit would unbolt from the exhaust housing if the extension weren't there. Look for six bolts holding the extension to the lower unit, three on each side, 3/8 socket.

I recommend a digital photo before you completely separate it so you can get it back together again. There will be loose parts when the extension comes off.

Hope this helps.

Jasper:
Yeah-4 broken bolts . I have to remove the extension to machine out the stubs.
Problem is I have a water tube seized up where it comes through the extension. I've used wedges and heat and still the extension won't drop more than a 1/2".
The shift rod connector is behind the upper extension joint and I was able to disconnect the shift rod through that 1/2" gap.
The drive shaft is out so the only thing holding this extension is the water tube where it drops down through the 5" extension. She's bound up solid.
Lots of fun!!!
Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply
