I have a 175 merc that will not fire unless kill wires are disconnected from the packs. Once I put the wire on one pack, one side of engine cuts, same for other. All grounds and wires look good on the motor. It ran when I bought it. Got it home tryed to fire it up and this is what Ive got now.. How do I check the ignition switch and so forth. I have an ohm reader, but have no clue on how to use it.. Step by step instructions would be great if someone is that generous. I do not have a manual yet, but will get one after xmas. Thanks for any help. -Justin

Its not switched off.. I just really want to know how to trouble shoot the problem. And what I would be looking for on the ohm reader. Ive read other threads about the topic but didnt really lead anywhere. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 86 175 Merc wont fire unless kill disconnected

The engine is killed by 1 of the below:
Ignition switch shut off, grounding the kill circuit.
Kill switch grounds the kill circuit.
Tilt switch (mounted near the switchboxes) grounds the kill circuit.
Mouse chewed wire grounds the kill circuit.

Disconnect the kill wire from both switchboxes, and connect an ohmmeter or continuity checker between one of the disconnected wires and ground. Disconnect things until the circuit opens up. You've then found the fault.

hope it helps

Heres a test for the ign system but your problem is not with it, it's in the boat harness or mercury switch.
