Hi,
firstly im having an intermittent issues with going in reverse, on a day out after using reverse a few times, sometimes it goes straight in and fine, sometimes it wont go in untill its past the lock in point and the revs are high or it will just give the almost in grinding gear noise. Ive not forced it.
Im not sure why when it goes ok it works fine but then it has problems.
any ideas.

Also i feel my engine is running very rich, it runs fine and revs ok, i just feel it runs very rich buy A the constant smell of unburnt fuel, and B the oil slick out the top exhaust holes down my leg.
How would i adjust and where.

thanks in advance.

1985 appears to be the last year of a 235 model.---------On those crossflow motors you start with a compression test.

That is OK then.----Shift cable may be worn out internally causing the shift problem.

Regarding shifting: The shift lever under the bottom carb goes through a hole drilled in the intake manifold. That drilled hole has two small plastic circular bushings. One on each end of the shaft. If these are missing or deteriorated, you will have a lot of shifting problems. 312708 is the part number for the two bushings. You will get a black, exhaust residue which will leak from your engine. If the exhaust manifold gets loose, the black, tarry exhaust residue will drip down the lower leg. Tightening the outer cover may help, but there are also bolts under the outer cover that run up/down the inside middle of the inner cover. Those can be loose also. The black leak in itself is not a sign of imminent failure. But it's possible that some exhaust gas may also leaking into the cowling when running. This exhaust leak is more problematic, as it will let exhaust smoke get reingesting into the running engine through the carbs. That's will become a problem if you continue to run it that way.

If you go to the factory parts diagram (epc.brp.com) you can see the exploded parts diagram for the Cylinder and Crankcase. Item 40 shows all of the various bolts for the exhaust covers. Both inner and outer. Most of the small 28 bolts go around the outside cover. The various longer bolts go on the center of the inside cover first, before the outer cover is installed.
