86, 87 or 88 Mariner???

OK, I have a Mariner 40 ELTO, 6E9L with Serial # 502925 manufactured in Japan (Yahama?).

My local dealer thought(?) it was from 1986 but I was "SURE" I found a reference to it with a manufacture date of 1987 or 1988 and not 1986. I'm new to the board - but read thru a few hundred posts first - I couldn't find the information there so does anyone know the answer? It would be much appreciated. Thank you and GREAT FORUM!

P.S. If anyone has the answer what does the "L" 6E9L stand for?

Your engine was built in 1987 and is a E-electric, L- long shaft, T - twin, O - oil injected engine.
