got the boat in the water/running with what i thought was fine. i was checking the engine and got a shock from the plug boot on the top cylinder. i used a spark plug light tester and the light didnt light.. i tried switching plugs to see if they were the issue but no light
i then tried switching them (im gonna call them coils-square box with wire)1 to 2 cylinder.. neither would light then
switched plugs to check - nothing
went home and grabbed a coil from a doner/broke engine - no spark

why would switching them kill power to both
i read online that theres a trigger switch under the flywheel that could be the issue

thanks in advance

Ignition system: Stator, trigger, cd units, coils, sparkplug. Or any one of the old fragile wires connecting them all together.

The square box: called the pack or CDI.
The 86 came with plug in connectors.
After that they used a common buss bar with screw down connections.

The plug in ones were known for loose connections and failing.

The trigger you speak about could be bad but you shouldn't loose spark on all 4

outboardignitiondotcom or CDIigniton. com has test procedures for your motor.

If you got a shock through the boot from the coil? that tells me the end needs to be replaced.
No spark on 2= bad stator.

Look up under the flywheel and see if the magnet is still glued in place?
They break loose and the stator stops generating.

You'll need a meter for doing the basic tests on the stator.
For the more advanced you need a DVA or peak reading volt meter.
Do a compression/ spark test.
Get a spark tester.
Remove all the plugs, ground them or the pack can blow.
Turn the motor over and check each cyl. for spark.
If the motor turns slow it won't generate enough power to spark.

Post the results of the tests.
