It ran fine then one day, no start.

Starter works, fuel pump is working.

Tested the spark with a tester, bought from autozone. Can't see anything.

So where do I begin? I want to test the ignition coils but I'm not sure how to do that. I have a multimeter, can I use that in some way to see if it is good. (both plugs aren't sparking).

Here are some pictures.

Ok, I'll start here. The killswitch is rotted. Not sure if this part is causing the no start.

Thanks for the help. It's hard to pull in and out of the slip in a sailboat with no motor...

I'd say it is almost certain it is the kill switch. Find the two wires that go to it and disconnect one of them and then check again for spark. Best of luck. Rick.

Agree ^^^^ . Disconnect the kill switch, and use the choke to kill it.

Re: '86 9.9 Evinrude No Start

I followed the kill switch wires back through into the motor. One of them is grounded to the bolt that holds one of the ignition coils on. I disconnected that one.

Tried to start it. No luck. I THINK I heard a pop. As if maybe it tried to fire. But after trying for awhile I think it might have been when I let off the start button, the electric start disengaged, or something like that. Again, I'm not sure.

When I had the spark tester on it, I didn't see anything. But, I'm not 100% on that thing. First time I've ever used one of those.

I took the plugs out, sprayed "starter fluid" into the cylinder, replaced plugs, and tried a couple of more times. No luck. I'm sure if I was getting spark, then that stuff would have ignited.

Now, I gues, onto testing the ignition coils? How do I go about that?

EDIT: does the degree of angle the outboard is resting at, have a big factor? It's resting with the bow end, lower then the stern. I ask because I notice there was gas sitting in the air intake housing. From repeated start attempts, pushing gas into the carb.

You disconnected the ground wire to the kill switch. If the other wire happens to be grounded, then the motor will die. Try to disconnect the other wire.

I disconnected all the wires coming from the kill switch. Still no spark.

Is there another way to test the ignition coil? Or the power pack?
