Recently bought a 86 bayliner with a fresh almost easy to fire 350, has Volvo-penta out drive, my question is that I've never seen a pump driven off the crank , is it necessary ? Have the main Chevy water pump on the motor , and the out drive has a impeller
Too doesn't it ? So is it necessary ? Why did they go to this, used to have a old aristocrat that had a 302 in it , but it didn't have that on it !

Many Volvo-Penta's have that pump, so it may not have anything in the outdrive. The pump on the engine is the recirculating pump and has no way to draw water up into the engine, it only circulates it through the engine block.

your old aristocrat with the dorf motor had the raw water pump in the outdrive which required you to separate the lower unit from the outdrive every 2 years for service. volvo puts their raw water pump on the engine (similar to what Mercruiser does with the Bravo). so its easier for you mr boat owner to maintain.

you still have to do bellows replacement and u-joint inspection every 2 years
