OK my fuel pump is bad diaphragm is leaking. It is for 4.3 86 would it be worth it to rebuilt if I can get the diaphragm or should I just get new pump. It looks to be in good shape just old 29years old.

Howdy,

I wouldn't hesitate to rebuild a diaphragm pump if I could find the right kit for it. I just don't know if they're available anymore.....

Yeah. rebuild kits are just about non-existent for diaphragm pumps nowadays..... You might be able to find a replacement pump from Autozone, Napa or Oreilliys though depending on the model. I was able to get the correct Airtex replacement (marine) pump for my 454 from AZ.

Does it matter what style fittings are on the pump? I have a pump with 2 threaded fittings. Other pumps at Oreillys have 1 threaded fitting and fitting a fixed tube... I tried cross referencing the 0-3000 Carter number and the long number on the side of the mount and no luck... :(

It shouldn't matter. I had to ask the same thing a while back, and I was told you can clamp the hose to the fixed tube.

Most boats have a steel line up to the carburetor. You may have to scrounge fittings to match it all up. The line from the filter to the pump can be steel (if everything is rigid) or standard flexible (USCG J1527 A1 Approved) hose and it's ok to use a hose clamp to connect.

Carefully inspect the fuel hose though. replace it if it looks like it's getting cracked etc. You can get SAE J1527 A1 fuel line at most marine stores. Napa can get it too (or may have it in stock) if the store has a lot of Marine stuff in stock.

Here's some pretty good info on fuel systems
