I'm fairly new to boating and have three questions.

1) taking the boat back to the the marina at idle speed yesterday I found the engine was smoking alot. I understand that all 2 strokes smoke especially at startup.

2)My tach only seems to work intermitantly, generally only when I'm above about 3500 rpms.

3)What is the max rpms for this engine?

Thanks for your help.

Re: 86 Evinrude 120

this is for an 1988 120/140 to give you an idea.
full throtlle range 5000 to 6000
idle timing 8 degrees ATDC
power rated @ 5500 rpm 120=120 / 140=140
max spark advance 18 degrees +/- 1 degree BTDC.
hope that atleast gives you an idea. the 1985 to 87 have a smaller bore than the 1988 + years.
-
these motors are easy to work on, but you need to get both a service and a part manual from omc/bomb. or try ebay.

Thanks for the info. Any idea on the tach problem, or if the smoking is normal?

Re: 86 Evinrude 120

Intermittant tach operation sometines signals a faulty alternator/rectifier.
This unit is packaged as one and runs around $100.
Check your wire harness on your control box to make sure there is a solid connection. Check the pins(male) and coupling to make sure all the contacts are clean. 2 cycle engines smoke quite a bit especially during initial startup anf idle.
Does it smoke when running on the water.
Gather your engine is a VRO (I've got a 140 1985 VRO) You may be running a tad rich.

Going back up to the boat Thursday, and will check the contacts and wiring for good connections. It is a VRO and I will make sure that the engine is truely warmed up before checing smoke level at idle. Thanks for your help.
