I have an 86 evinrude 15 hp outboard. I cant get it to start. I have done everything I can think of. New plugs , carb kit , Compression at 80 lbs. each cyl. , soaked cylinders with liquid wrench, fresh high test gas with 40-1 oil mix. It hadn't run for two yrs. when I got it . With ether it will sputter once but wont fire. Any good ideas ?

What is your starting procedure? I assume you are using the choke. Do you have the throttle on full, up against the neutral stop? You could also confirm that your timing advance is synchronized properly with your carburetor by ensuring that the little mark on your throttle cam (the metal piece that pushes on the carb's roller) is in the middle of the carburetor's roller JUST as it touches the throttle cam.

Did you rebuild the carb? Could you have installed the float upside down? Spark check? Spray some pre-mix straight in the engine and see if it sputters!

Hi . I did put a kit in the carb and the float was installed correctly. It has new plugs and fresh gas. I squirted some mixed fuel into the carb and it sputtered a little , but just once . I tried it again and it backfired once . Could it be a weak spark. Is there a way of testing the coils and or the power pack ?

I normally just remove the plugs, Then install the ignition wire back on the top plug, hold the plug against the block and turn the engine over, then just look at the spark. Repeat for the bottom cylinder! Just make sure you are holding the boot or hold with pliers so you don't get shocked!

You're problem sounds fuel related to me but it could certainly be spark related also. Check the spark first!

Did you pull the fuel pump apart? If not I would. They can normally be taken apart and cleaned without needing a rebuild kit, also check all of the fuel lines.

Is the primer bulb pumping up good?

I did check for spark. It's a white spark rather than a blue spark. I put a carb kit in because it had the cork float so I replaced it. I replaced all fuel lines and the ball is pumping up fine . Every time I check the plugs they are wet. I even tried exchanging the coils with the ones from my 9.9 Evinrude ( 1986 also )

Are the orange wires reversed on the coils ?--Orange blue should be on the top.
