Hi!
Ive bought an old 86 Evinrude 40 hp this winter and I have just mounted it on my boat. It started just fine and ran nice and smooth. I checked the water flow from the pee hole and it looked ok in the beginning. I took her out for a testrun. After 10-15 min I checked the waterflow again and no it seemed to be less flow. I turned around and when I came back to the peer it was just dripping from the peehole. I stopped the engine and started it again after a minute or so. The flow was better but still limited. I dont know if the impeller has been replaced or any other work has been done to the coolingsystem. I dont know if the engine were overheating, but Im worried about the cooling. I am quit capable when it comes to car-engines, but I have very limited experience on outboards. I know I have to remove the lower part to replace the impeller. Is it difficult or is it possible to do for a home mechanic? Could the problem be anything else than the impeller?
Thanks a lot!
Paul

The tubing for the tell tale is more than likely plugged up with some crud. try blowing back through the tube. I'm sure the pro's will be back to tell what else to do. Would be a good idea to change water pump & impeller. Pretty easy task

Hi and thanks for a quick answer!
I would try to blow back through the tell tale tubing first thing tomorrow! Should I use compressed air?
Another question - Is it normal with water coming out together with the exhaus?

Paul

Hi Skipmink,

If you are unsure of the history of maintainance the motor has recieved it would be a good idea to change the impellor and gearbox oil. The parts are not expensive and if you can find your way around a car engine you will have no problems. Get yourself a manual for the motor if you havn't already, which will give you step by step instructions.

Thanks RPJS!
I have changed the gearbox oil, sparkplugs, and rebuilt the carbs and fuelpump just to be sure. I started the engine in a barrel of water this winter, and the water was flowing just fine from the tell tale. I am in the prosess of getting a manual, but that is not an easy task in Norway. I probably have to get one shipped over from the US. Is the impeller and the waterpump the same thing?
All the best!
Paul

I like your "Born to fish, forced to work".... :D Skipmunk.

You are going in the right direction. Get the manual and read it. Get to know the engine.

Besides the impeller, which is the water pump, change out the thermostat.

If you have no history on the engine, do this.....

Take compression readings on both cylinders and keep them recorded for future reference. Check the spark...they should be hot and thick. Do a decarb....easy to do. Look at the fuel lines. Replace any that have become hard. The lines should be plyable so they can keep their grip on the connection points.

Make sure the over heat alarm is working.

If you don't have a tach, consider getting one. It will tell you quicker than any other gage what the engine is doing.

AND....don't hesitate to post any questions you may have about the rig....

Good Luck!

Re: 86-Evinrude 40 hp cooling problem?

Hi OBJ!
I read the manual all the time... at least when nothing else works. I once had a TV-set and I was always complaining about a problem with the VCR connection. After three years I read the manual and the problem was fixed in a minute.
When I get the manual I will read it and replace the impeller and the thermostat.
I have done the fuelline replacement this winter. She runs as smooth as a baby - exept for the missing/reduced tell tale flow.
What about the water coming out together with the exhaust? I could not see any water at idle, but I think some water came out togethter with the exhaust when I throttled her up. Is that normal?

GO Manual!
Paul

Glad to see your name Paul....like that.

Yes, a little misty water and exhaust should come out of the exhaust relief ports especially after the engine is warm. Not a lot of either...but some. Not seeing any water at idle is OK.

Dave F. is right....the tubing for the tell tale can get plugged pretty easy. Just take a piece of wire and run up into the tube. Will clear it out most of the time.

Keep posting Paul. Lots of good info here and someone else may be able to learn from your experience.

Jim
