Last Saturday the recoil spring broke when I was trying to start the motor to go duck hunting, I guess it was a good thing it broke at the dock and not out on the lake somewhere. Anyway I got the parts and put everything back together but I could not for the life of me remember how the red neutral safety interlock was positioned on the assembly. I looked in the shop manual and cant seem to find anything on it. I have a picture of how I think it goes on can someone tell me if this is correct?

Thanks in advance

Thanks, I did look at that also before I posted and I could not tell for sure, in his picture it looks like the interlock was outside the bracket, but that wont work.

Going by my often poor memory....... I think you nailed it on your own. Best of luck. Rick.

Your install is correct, inside the bracket.

That one is wrong, the interlock goes on the inside, spring on the outside.

bktheking and kindervb are right. Half the engines I look at have the spring on the wrong side. Rick.

Thanks Rick and bktheking, I could not see how the spring would work on the inside at all.

Re: 86 Evinrude 9.9 Starter

I noticed yesterday morning that the motor will start in gear now so I am not sure if I got something out of place when I put the starter on or not. Should the red leaver cam over and lock the starter when it is in gear? It does not only moves when the throttle in opened up. Thanks for your help.

Re: 86 Evinrude 9.9 Starter

If memory serves, the lockout is controlled by tiller handle position (the location of the magplate) which affects the ability to shift, sounds like something isn`t lined up or the spring is not set right, have a look at it.

If I have any memory left it seems to me that you could start these older mtrs in gear but the interlocks would only keep you from having the throttle to far advanced. Yes the spring is in the right position on the OP's post.

You are right boobie, & many get the throttle start interlock confused with the neutral safety feature. There was a phase in of the neutral safety feature. And then with the age of these motors, many could have been modified by now. If I remember right, most of the neutral safety features are only on the electric start motors.

To answer the initial question, the spring has to go in front of the steel upright, pushing the interlock into the gear notch when the timing plate cam is rotated forward.

I am currently going over my article & clarifying this section within the next couple of days, possibly with better photos. I will do more research on the mootrs I have left.
