I've been doing some work on my kicker motor. One thing the guy did that I bought it from was cut the kill switch wires so he could use an extension handle. I don't have the extension, so was looking at putting the wires back together at the throttle. I spliced som e wire in to make it fit then connected the two wires together. Problem is, both wires are same color, so I could not tell which wire from the throttle goes to the two wires coming from the handle. I guessed and it didn't work. Motor would not start. As soon as I cut the wires again, the motor started right up. SHould I just switch the wires or could the kill switch be bad?

If you have a multimeter it won't take long to figure out...

Kill switch could be bad. Check it out with a meter.

Kill switch is bad, anyone know the part number to pick on up? It's a 1986 Evinrude 8 HP.

Once you catch your breath after finding out the price of a new one, here's a few pix of my $8.00 fix.

Yeah, I think I'll do something like that. A small switch on the cowling will work great. I'm definately not picky, just looking to get something to work. I'll probably hit the auto part store and see what they have in a toggle switch. What is that push button switch you used?

It's a push button momentary switch with a rubber bulb to protect it from the elements. It's the exact same design that OMC used on their older outboards. As I said, I paid 8 bucks for it at the hardware store. Any auto parts store should have them too.

You could add a safety lanyard style kill switch like I did on my 86 9.9. Those are only $10 or so here in the iBoats store.
