I previously had problems getting into reverse. Mr. Acampoa gave me directions on how to adjust the pivot screw, shift linkage after I removed the pivot screw to drain the gear lube. I didn't get a chance to use the instructions, before a semi-trusted outboard mechanic, removed the lower unit and replaced the shift dog. He said the shift dog was pretty worn, but that the rest of the gears looked good.

My question is how much should parts and labor be to replace the shift dog. He didn't replace the water impeller - said it looked good. He charged me $340. It was a little hard to part with the cash. But for as old as the motor is, I think this was a good deal. Or did I get taken to the cleaners? What do you think?

A new dog clutch costs somewhere around 150 bucks and the mechanic will charge 100 bucks an hour for labor so 350 could be about right.

Personally, I think It was a poor decision on his part to not replace the impeller. He should as a matter of course have replaced the impeller--even if it did look good. He had the lower unit off already, unless he replaced the dog clutch while the lower unit was attached to the engine.--A 20 dollar part and another couple of bucks in labor and he would not need to worry about you being dissatisfied if the engine did overheat.
