recently i picked up an 86 125HP model#1253X6B and actually i have a few questions if the motor is not charging my batteries could this possibly be the rectifier ok and if it is, is this a critical component for the performance of this motor like even though i have dual batteries does it need the power for it to run it seems to be running rough just not right its not smoking alot or missing and is a backfire now and then normal now since i got this motor i have cleaned the carbs and replaced plugs replaced ALL fuel lines on the motor AND from motor to new prime bulb to tank! fuel pump diaph.have not been replaced as they seemed in working order no tears or visible wear NONE of the set screws have been adj or touched they are as they were from the marina what im getting at is if i have fine compression 130 133 133 135 fine fuel (no leaks- not loosing prime) and fine spark why doesent this motor run fine? it is hard starting, and it stalls , to start it i have to have it at almost 3/4 throtle and then when i go to put it into gear it dies its almost like i have to coax it into gear quickly push the nuetral pin in and gun it to get going but then it runs fine all through the power range until i stop then it starts all over again it seems to be a decent o/b but i dont know what else to do but pay big repair bills and i was wondering if this has happend to any one else before i do all replys greatly apprec.

Re: 86 Force 125

Welcome to iboats.

Charging system and ignition system are separate. I'm betting on the idle mixture screws. I'll bet they set them running on muffs. Once you get some exhaust back pressure with the motor sitting in the water, they're not set rich enough. Try opening them 1/4 turn. Some mechanics will also try to fine tune each carb. They should be set the same. Not 7/8 turn on one, 1 1/4 turn on the other. If you want to start all over, turn them in lightly until they seat. Then screw them out 1 1/4 turns. That should get the motor running. Then fine tune from there, but adjust both carbs 1/8 turn at a time. I'd be suprised if you needed less than 1 turn or more than 1 1/2.
