Hi all, Knowing nothing about boats I went and bought an 86 Bayliner w/ an 86 Force 125 on it. During show and tell, the seller fired it up for me. It smoked a bit but being a 2 stroke I figured that was acceptable. Now empty your mouths of anything that will foul the moniter screen or keyboard. The peeholes? weren't peeing. Asked why, he told me it was aircooled and sure enough there was warm air coming out. I bought the whole thing! Now after lurking and soaking in the info here I need advise. The motor idled approx 10 mins in this condition. I have the manual on order, but till it gets here, what should/can I do to see if it has been damaged beyond use? The boat, motor, and trailer cost $1,000 so I'm not hurt too bad unless I have to replace the big buck motor.

Re: 86 Force 125

I assume that when he fired it up for you he did not have water hooked up to it? If so, the water pump impeller is probably toast. The "warm air" you felt was exhaust. These engines are water cooled. I would also verify that the overheat alarm is functional.

Cylinder compression is one of the first things to check. The amount of pressure is not as important as long as all cylinders are within 10% from lowest to highest. Look at the plugs to see how they look. Are all of them burning the same? Also drain the lower unit oil to see what it looks like. If there is any milky white residue that comes out, then that's a sign the seals are bad and water is getting into it. Just a couple of things to check out. I'm sure other folks will have additional suggestion.
