Re: 86 force 50 wireing problems

On the wiring diagram I have there should be a fuse between the large + IN terminal on the solenoid & an 8 pin terminal block. The original wire was red in color. The other wire coming from the other side of the terminal block pin was red/purple or red. It runs up to the ignition switch in the forward control.
This wire supplies power form the battery to the rest of the wiring on the motor through the ignition switch. You will need this for the motor to run. If it keeps blowing fuses you either have a short somewhere in the wiring or the wrong capacity fuse is being used.
The short could be anywhere. Is there anything in particular causes the fuse to blow?
The diagram does not state the fuse capacity. I have a 1998 75 hp & it has a 20 amp fuse.
Does this sound like the wire you are having problem with?

be carefull ...blows at 20A or 20 A continuous current ? Old style fuses had the blow rating on them whilst modern ones are continuous rating . This fuse also carries the charge current to the battery .

Re: 86 force 50 wireing problems

i found a manual for the motoor i have it was missing the fuse so i installed one.i also replaced the rectifier but now the motor wont even turn over and when i hook the exta wire coming from the battery the inline fuse in that wire blows instently.before i could idle and drive in reverce all day long but a minute after putting the throttle in forward the fuse would blow.i have looked over all the wires i can see and there are none that are grounding/shorting out.any other ideas would be great.

if the starter relay was bad, and the motor had the second power wire going to the wire terminal would the motor still start?

Re: 86 force 50 wireing problems

Your original fault is connected with a short that occurs when you have the motor in forward gear. Your motor runs well in reverse so the motor itself is probably OK. The only things that change when you put the boat in forward gear are the throttle and gear linkages. The throttle linkages move in the same direction in reverse or forward so I think you have an electrical short connected with the gear linkage mechanism.

Two things come to mind. The ?Neutral Interlock Switch? which on your motor (according to the wiring diagram I have) is by the gear linkages on the motor itself, may be faulty. There could be a worn wire that touches the linkage when it moves into the forward position.

The other place to look would be in the forward control. If your motor has a trim switch in the control handle the switch or the wiring leading up to it may ground out when the handle is moved into forward gear. Look for loose connector on the switch or worn insulation on the wires where they go from the main loom up into the handle.

When you fitted the rectifier which wires did you need to touch?

From the diagram there is a red wire that connects to the fused side of the main power supply. E.g. with the fuse between it and the solenoid. The two yellow/green wires connect to the yellow wires from the stator. The purple or grey wire is the signal wire for the tacho if you have one. There may or may not be a black wire for the earth. Some regulators earth through the body of the regulator to the bracket they are mounted on.
