86 Force 50 Wont Stay Running

I have an 86 Force 50 that I have replaced the spark plugs, points, condensers and carburetor on. The problem I am having is that it will sometimes start and sometimes it will not. When it does start it will not stay running. Yesterday it fired up and I turned it off to grab a tool. A minute later it would not start again. When it does start it will not idle and will only run at a high rpm for a short time. Not sure what else to do that I haven’t already done. Thanks for any advice.

Fresh fuel? Does your primer bulb pump up and stay firm? Is your fuel fittings sucking any air? What do you have your idle mixture screw set at?

Thanks for the responses. I gave up and took it to an outboard mechanic and it ended up being a bad diaphragm in the fuel pump that was causing the engine to flood.

davidcooper07, A bad diaphragm will cause your primer bulb not too pump up and stay firm. Glad that you have it running.

The primer doesn't stay hard after the motor starts.
It's only job is to pump up fuel and then it just sets there until it's needed again.
