I have recently acquired an 86 Force 85HP outboard. My question is that at present I am running a 67 johnson supersea horse 85hp. With the age of this motor Im worried that parts are becoming scarse and costly. I was considering to swap the motors. The Johnson has been redone but is presently at the shop still be worked on. Are these force motors just as unreliable? I have heard from others that these were cheap motors and could potentially be big problems. Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 86 Force 85HP

Force engines are a less complex engine than the johnnyrudes. They were built to be low cost engines for a low cost boat. If they are operated and maintained properly, they will last a long time. Mine is an '85 and is still going strong.

If you keep it up, it won't let you down. Yes, eventually parts will be an issue as with any old appliance. However, parts are still available for these engines online and at ebay.

Thanks for the input. Perhaps I should run the johnson as long as i can and just save money for a newer engine.
