I just bought this boat it is a '86 bayliner with a Force 85hp outboard motor. Here's the deal...

I hook the motor up to the hose at home and it runs like a champ, forwards, reverse, fast slow...

The minute i back it into the lake it starts and will only run for about 5 seconds and then dies, i don't even have time to put it in reverse and back it off the trailer!!

What in the heck is going on??

Back pressure my friend...when you run it outside the water..the exhaust can free flow..once in the water it has to push the water away to exit the engine.

Do a compression test and ign test on the engine.

Then get back to us.

TMD

I have no way to do a compression or ign test and we would like to go to the lake tomorrow and the closest marine mechanic is 1 1/2 hours away!

Is there any way to fix it?

Its possible that the engine is not warmed up..have you tried to feather the choke? ie press it on and off until it bogs the engine.

If it is a problem with the ign or comp..you will not want to use the boat as personal injury might happen as you may be stranded on the water.

Other than that...try to increase the idle. There is a flat head screw on the throttle tower.

You will need a 7/16 wrench...increase the throttle all the way in gear..WITHOUT the engine running. Loosen the nut back...and screw the screw IN.

TMD

I don't have a compression tester, but i did start it and completely block the exhaust with my hand and still kept running. It was a little boggy, but it still ran and i was completely blocking it!

I thought it might be the warm up thing too, i'll have to try that.

I also heard that my "stater" could be the problem. I have absolutely no idea what this is, but i hear in the force engine, they completely suck?

Looks like i need to get out of this one before it bites me in the a$$ !!

In the Seloc manual for Chrysler it says numerous times in bold print to NEVER run the engine in gear out of water.

This is the same problem I had, Try this keep your boat on the trailer back into the water take off the engune cover, lower your motor and run it if all seems happy, put your cover back on and I bet your engine dies. Problem is exhaust fumes anre choking your engine. The fix is a new exhaust boot, spring and clamp cost total about $12.00 go here http://www.dolleroffshore.com/parts.cfm?c=bt&m=6&pn=1402&bn=1233
Go to Motor Leg items #5,6,7 Good luck

Oh yeah as to why it runs good on the muffs in your driveway.
There are places for exhaust fumes to escape but in the water the only way fumes in the motor leg can come out is up.

I would advise anyone that buys a vehicle, or a boat and motor to aquire a manual upon taking possesion of it. If you have any mechanical ability, or inclination whatsoever, it will pay for itself many times over (especially if you think you know everything). :D :D :D :D
