Hey guys, my 86 gt200 is starving for fuel. I want to get rid of the whole fuel/oil pump system and replace it with an electric fuel pump, what do you guys think. thanks for any response.

I think it ain't normal that your engine is starving for fuel, unless you modified/tuned something so i would need more fuel than in the original situation.
You could replace the VRO with a regular fuel pump and use premix. But again i don't think that is a solution.

How do you know it is starving for fuel? Low top-end RPM? Slow accelerating?
Checked hoses, bulb, tank, carbs?

Re: 86 gt200 fuel pump?

Thanks for the reply. This motor is my first VRO. I'm not sure how the fuel/oil pump works, it looks like it is using a vavuum line fron the intake manifold to actuate a diafram pump. The motor starts after I use the primer bypass, but runs out of fuel. The previous owner has disconnect the vro sytem. I read in the manual that if the oil pump is not working correctly that it will stop pumping fuel. I think this may be happenning. If this is the case, how do I fake-out the system to think the pump is still working? If I went to an electric fuel pump, any recommendations, pressure, thanks.

It is indeed using a vacuum (Pulses from the crankcase).

I read in the manual that if the oil pump is not working correctly that it will stop pumping fuel.
But the previous owner disconnected the VRO? Or did he only disconnect the oil line and used it as 'regular' fuel pump (is that possible anyway, aside of the alarm it would give, unless he disconnected the wiring???)

You are running on pre-mix? (just to get sure)

The motor starts after I use the primer bypass
Probably a problem with my English (I'm from the Netherlands) but what do you mean with bypass?

And what do you mean with runs out of fuel? Is the primer bulb sucked vacuum? The pump doesn't get any fuel? The pump doesn't spit out fuel? Or is the problem in the carbs?

I don't know if a electrical pump will fit and/or work on your outboard and it's a bigger question if it would be the (right) solution.

Re: 86 gt200 fuel pump?

I'm sorry about not being very clear. The previous owner was using premix and he was using the original fuel pump with the oil side disconnected. When I hooked up the wiring, the warning horn would sound. I traced the cause to the tan wire going to the fuel/oil pump. There are 2 or 3 other wires going to the same place, I don't know what they are. When I said it started using the primer bypass, I should have made it clear that I used the little red lever on the the primer that took the place of the choke. I would love to know what those other wires are going to the pump are. Thanks again.
