In the down mode, the engine drops down due to a lessening of hydraulic pressure in the tilt cylinder and gravity. When the engine drops to where it hits the trim cylinder rods, hydraulic pressure takes over, pulling the engine inwards.<br /><br />Your problem is caused by salt, corrosion, rust, whatever, being accumulated in the steering/tilt tube area. This prevents the engine from dropping via the gravity route, and the engine stays in that position until the trim rams are hydraulically pulled in, then pressure is applied at that point to the tilt cylinder.<br /><br />The cure is to loosen one of the large steering tube nuts about 1/2 turn. Carefully using a 2x2 or 2x4 and a large hammer/mallet, tap the swivel bracket sideways a few times (back and forth sideways). Grease the grease fittings on the front of the transom brackets that surround the steering/tilt tube. That should do it.
