I just bought my first boat and it has a 1986 Johnson 60hp outboard. When I start the motor it starts reving up to extremely high speed. Can anyone help?

Possibilities include stuck carb butterfly.. air leak between carb and reed valves.

I'd pull the cover pieces off the carb(s) and start looking there.

I'll assume you killed it with the ignition switch.
a runaway can destroy the engine if you don't shut it down fast.

Does it only do that when you enable the starting throttle linkage? Or, does it always happen?
