86 Mariner ran fine then wouldn't start again

Recently bought a boat that has an '86 Mariner 135 on it (0B106463)
Had lots of help getting it running pretty good
took it out today for the first time
Started fine after pumping a few times, cruised around a little getting a feel for the boat, seemed to be running fine
Cut it off to do some fishing, started right back up when time to move to new spot after 30 minutes or so
Cut if off again in new spot and trolled/fished for over an hour, maybe closer to two
Cranked right away when time to go pick up family for boat ride, went all the way across the lake, 5 minute ride or so
Leaving the dock, I backed all the way out, about 20 yards
Right when I was ready to turn around and go forward it stalled. I don't believe that I had put it in gear yet but may have at least gotten it back into neutral.
Could not get it started again so trolled back to dock, loaded it up and went home

Sound like something anyone has experienced?
What should I be checking
I'm guessing fuel delivery?

Thanks!

Did you go through your starting sequence again? Engines will do that till they have warmed up.

Squeeze the bulb till firm

Put engine in vertical position

Lift the fast idle all the way

Turn key to on and push in holding for a few seconds.

While holding in roll on over to START.

If engine doesn't light off after 10 seconds or so, repeat process.

After engine lights, reduce fast idle to keep rpms withing reason....couple of thousand is what I use.

If engine tries to stall, just push the key in till it catches, changing nothing else. It may require you doing this several times.

After engine settles down on it's own, be on your way.
------------------
Possibly idle is set a tad low. 675 +/- 25 is what my engine is spec'd for. I run around 700-800.

I didn't go through all the steps you suggest (but I will from now on thanks) other than squeezing the bulb but I'm sure it was warmed up already as we just had come across the lake and it had sat running at the dock a few minutes as we took some gear to the car and added a couple people

The only thing different from the rest of the morning when it seemed to be running fine was the fact that I was in reverse to get out because I didn't have room to turn around at that moment.

The reverse blocked the exhaust passages and may have locked up the block with burned gasses, not allowing any fresh fuel/air in so you stalled. Since the burned gasses were in the cylinders they couldn't light off new fuel. The faster you backup the more prone this is to happen. Going through the starting process as described should clear it out.

I had a feeling it had to do with running in reverse...thanks for the info!!
