86' Suzuki overheating

Hello, I am having a problem with my 9.9 hp (converted to 15 hp) 86' suzuki. I bought used,and it started fine when I put it in the water. After traveling for a short time, it would bog down and then shut off. After sitting for 1/2 hour or so, it would fire again and repeat this process. It is peeing water, but upon taking the one head cover off, the water seems to not be getting to the head, but only just below it, to the pee hole. Does anyone have any information on what may be the problem. If so, thanks in advance.<br /><br />zvilledoc

First thought would be that your water pump impeller is in need of replacement. It pumping water, just not enough. Check the housing when you have it apart and while the lower unit is off clamp a garden hose on the water pickup tube and check flow through the block.

Thank you for the prompt response. I will try to do this first thing in the morning to see if it works. I thought maybe that was the problem, but someone told me that a impeller either works or it doesn't, there is no inbetween. So I just didn't check it. I hope this works because if so, I found a steal in the boat that I bought. Thanks again.<br /><br />zville doc

I would disagree with those that say an impeller works or it doesn't. They are made of rubber and can take a set so that they don't flex properly. Also they can wear at the tips and on the top and bottom allowing air to enter and decrease the flow. Worst case scenario is when the impeller arms tear off and can clog the cooling passages. Many people will look at an impeller an say "it looked OK". If you go to the trouble of looking at one, replace it. They are inexpensive and most of the work is in getting to it.
