I bought an 87 Winner 1850 last week. The PO had the throttles all out of rig so I re-rigged them. The engine starts right up and idles. Shifts into gear with no clunking or anything. The only gauge it was built with was fuel so I ordered a set of Teleflex Argents.

Well the instruments came in this week and I got them installed. So now I have a tach to see RPMs.

Anyway, now that I have a tach I need to know what the Idle RPM's should be both on the hose and in the water.

I'm sure these will be in my manual if the postman ever brings it. But I'm planning a test run tomorrow.

set the idle speed around 1,000 on muffs, it then has to be fine tuned in the water with the motor in gear. 600-800 rpms. get it as low as you can, in gear, without the motor stalling. you wot rpms should be in the 5500-6000 range, if not re- prop the motor. 1 inch difference in pitch, is about 200 rpms.

Very important to fine tune it in gear and in the water. That is when you most need it in everyday use.

Thanks for the answers.

I ran her on the Alabama River today. As I said the PO had the throttles out of rig. It was idling at 2000 on the hose.

Before I went out I backed it down to between 1000 and 1200. Got her in the water and she was 800 with the trim up and 600 all the way down.

Once we got down the I took her up to WOT. 5000 rpms. So it sounds like the prop is matched good.

Came back in and marked the dock on the GPS. Idled fine around the docks.

Took here back out and went south. Went back to WOT she came right up on plane went to 5000rpm and made 38.9 mph on the GPS . Backed her back to 4400 rpm and she cruised at 33 mph.

The idle speed was perfect for getting on the trailer.

You may want to get your WOT RPM to 5,500 to 5,800 to make sure you do not "lug" the motor.

Glad you got the idle sorted though.
