87 2.3l OMC Tach is acting crazy and engine is missing at half to full throttle.

With trim all the way down I get to around 3200 rpms. When I start trimming giving gas the tach will jump to 4500 to pegged out. Based on the engine sound and speed it should still be around 3800 at this point.

As soon as this happens it starts skipping too. I am thinking bad coil? Would this cause the higher rpm miss and the tach to act up?

I have also noticed a pretty big hole on the exhaust bellows right out of the transom. Would this cause this problem?

Boat has new propeller, points, cap, rotor, plugs, wires.

Just had the boat out, it is getting worse. Above 7 mph it is stumbling and skipping. Any ideas?

Have you rechecked your point gap?

I am going to do that tomorrow. I was just thinking about all of that. I am starting to think it is the coil. Since the tach is hooked up to the coil I am wondering if this is why my tach gauge is jumping all around. I also noticed my night time lights flashing when it would stumble tonight.

What ever the problem is it has to be related to the tach somehow. It was running perfect I looked down and my rpms shot way up as it started to stumble. Very weird.

Found the problem. The thin copper wire coming from the points was snapped in half. I hate points!!!! Anyone done a conversion kit on a 2.3L Omc to get rid of the points?
