hi I was wandering if someone could tell me how to drain the lower end (aka) gear box so I can change oil and inspect it, while i'm waiting on carb kits, fuel pump kit, plugs, and new spark plug ends, trying to go over every inch, I ordered a manual but did not receive it yet. the prop turn's in neutral, but reading on hear it seem's most likely the cable is out of adjustment. will disconnect and move it manually, then readjust cable if that is the problem. also what weight oil, and what type. I bought this boat, and engine and have no Idea when has ran last. I did get it to run briefly 5 min, was fuel coming from weep holes in carb, and back fired a lot. the plug wires, and plugs were completely rusted, the electrodes on bottom plug looked good. thank's for any help steve

Wow! 1) Drain the lower unit by removing the screw "way" down under the bullet. Probably an allen head screw. Check the oil for metalic parts. Magnet will make it easy. 2) Prop should spin/rotate in neutral. Stoppabble by hand. 3) 90 marine. 4) Fuel from weep holes= needle and seat in the carbs. 5) Multiple backfire = A "deffinate fuel pump inspection, probably a torn or perforated diaphram. 6) I hope it's obvious that any corroded/rusted electrics have to be addressed.Edit: Im'a Steve too.

thank's for the info, i'm going to try to get to it after work one day if not i'll get at it on the weekend, yea I wanted to check needle and seats , read to take off bowl level float parrel to base put on small piece of hose blow into it, no air out good, air through bad. I ordered complete carb kit's not sure what all comes with them. just to go over a few thing's since i'm new to boat's, gear case oil is 90 weight marine oil, and while the engine is running and in neutral the prop will turn. thank's again

Picture 004.jpgTach and stuff 003.jpgTach and stuff 004.jpg
The first pic is the fill/vent.Second is the pivot pin.DON"T TOUCH!!! #3 is the drain plug.
The fill/vent screws, fill from the fill untill the oil comes out the vent. Then from the vent till it comes out the fill, ten again from the fill. Might be overkill but my lowers have never had a problem??
The prop turning in N is normal.
Do a compression/spark test FIRST.
This way you'll know if the motors worth fixing??

jerry thank's for the pics, we talked in my other thread the compression is 122, 124, 122 in each cylinder cold, pretty much even across the board. Just waiting on all the part's from the dealer. I do have another Q if you come back to this thread can I use a regular car battery just to fire this thing up and test motor once parts are installed, or will this hurt the electrical system. Both are 12v, boat batts are deep cycle. just wandering before I hook up and cost my self more money.

Hey bayliner. No the car battery won't hurt it just using it in the driveway since you can't get stranded!! I would use a marine battery on the water as the plates inside are thicker and the battery can withstand getting charged then drained low then charged back up again.

If your gonna use a trolling motor. Then use deep cycle batteries.
Use a starting battery for the motor(it charges up quicker).
Deep cycles aren't necessary for normal operation.
If your gonna have a BIG stereo and use all kinds of accessories. Then a Deep cycle will come in handy.
If that's the case I install a switch and use both kinds.
They can be charged from the motor, but the deep cycle will need to be charged at home with a battery charger.
I've run 2 car batteries for 25years and have ran a stero a VHF and a GPS/ depth finder all that never shut off.
Never once did I need to charge a battery.

Re: 87' 85 force engine gear box

just reading jerry's thread probably wont be running trolling motor, but I plan on keeping two batteries on boat, 1 as back up, will have car radio, depth gauge and small car radio, and cb radio for emergencies. was planning on getting 2 deep cycle batteries, with plunty of cca's. in 2 yrs plan on adding power tilt, and trim.
