87 90 hp V4 Stalls out only when the gas tank is full. Help!!

If I fill the tank until the auto shut off gas will spit out of the vent. I can take it out It starts just fine and runs great for 500 ft. then stalls. It will fire right back up and go another 500 ft and stall. If I Pump the bulb it will stay running as soon as I stop pumping the motor will run out of gas. I have to manually pump the bulb until the Gas gauge reads just above 3/4 of a tank. Once I get here the boat operates perfect. This is getting old. Any suggentions?<br /><br />Mark

Welcome to iboats. Without knowing your engine very well I would assume (I know that I shouldn't do this) that your tank is not venting until the fuel level drops below it. However I would think that that point would be reached well before 3/4 of a tank. When you are filling listen for an increase in pitch at the neck of the gas line. When it starts to increase then finish filling the tank manually and slowly. When the fuel gushes up and closes the vent that is when it comes splashing out. Next time you fill up leave the gas cap a little loose and see if that helps. You may have to install another vent.

Thanks for the advice, This has happend before and I am ussusally carfull when filling the tank as you advised. I am just looking to keep this from happening as I am tired of thinking about it when I fill up and then put here on the lake.<br /><br />Last night I made sure there were no low spots in the vent line and changed the fuel filter.<br /><br />I was wondering if this might be a sign that my VRO pump is going out?

Sure sounds like a venting problem to me, too.<br /><br />Another long shot is that when the tank is full or near full it is causing the anti siphon valve to stick.<br /><br />Good luck.

Anti Siphon valve? Is this on the vent or the filler?. Is therre some type of valve near the vent screen?<br /><br />How can I see if it is working?<br />Last night I removed the vent hose and blew throught it, and it was clear<br /><br /> Thanks for the help?<br /><br />Mark

If your tank has one, the AS valve is in the pickup, Mark. Its purpose is to prevent fuel from siphoning back into the tank when the fuel pump is not sucking it out.

The next time it happens loosen the gas cap. If the problem clears up you know it is a vent problem

Last time this happend I removed the gas cap, and it still acted this way. So maybe this does rule out the venting issue<br /><br />I am starting to think that My VRO pump is getting weak.<br /><br />Thanks everyone for the ideas.<br /><br />Mark
