1987 Alpha drive in a 21' Larson. When plug was pulled recently, I notice oily substance coming from bilge. Checked lower unit and was off by about 4-5 ounces. Any idea of a simple fix to this or would mechanic be required?

Thanks

It sounds like you have a leak in the seal by the ujoints.First make sure it is gear oil and not engine oil.gear oil has a much stronger smell than motor oil.You will have to pull the drive which you can do yourself.there will be gear oil in the bellows if it is leaking from the seal by the ujoints.I had my mechanic replace the seal on mine.He can also do a pressure and vacuum test to the drive while you have it off.You may be able to do it yourself but I believe you may need a special tool or two. Re: 87 Alpha Drive-Lower Unit Oil Leak into Hull

mechanic checked lower unit and reports milky oil. Water obviously in lower unit. I had checked lower unit several hours back and it over-flowed from top vent and was not milky--boat had been operated prior to this check but not in several days. Faced with $200 to repair oil leak problem and $650 to follow mechanic recommendation to replace seals in lower drive. I do not have records from the prior owner but boat was well cared for. Should I still have all seals replaced at this point? Maybe put that off for winter? Suggestions.

Thanks,

Marion
