I have a couple questions. I am currently selling my 89 bayliner capri with a 2.3 litre ford motor. I took off the hose after the water pump and found pieces of rubber in it. Im assuming its from the water pump. Is it possible the pieces got somewhere that could cause problems? If so any suggestions? I dont want to sell it to someone and then they have problems with that. Also I am buying an 87 bayliner with a 2.3 Volvo penta motor. Other than its an older boat does anyone know of any gremlins with this motor? Thanks

T-stat check that if you want pull the riser and check that.

Long hose that connects to t-stat pull at transom.

You have a heat exchanger then that will hold pieces.

Ayuh,... Are you Sure it's a Volvo motor,...

Me thinks you're buying Another copy of the Same POS you've got Now....

Ayuh,... If Course it'll cause Problems,....

Backflush it from a point Upstream, flushing out the debris....

Re: 87 Bayliner 19 ft

Volvo does have basically a 2.3L engine, howeveer it's not called that. The Bayliners of that era used a lot of the AQ125 4 cylinder Volvo engines.
The engines run great when they are kept tuned up, and have good timing belts, a bit cold natured to start when cold because they don't have chokes. But good running engines otherwise.
The drives (270's & 280's) are about bullet proof and a very good drive. Downside is they have no trim, just tilt. Usually not a problem unless you want a go fast boat.
Parts are still available for the engines and drives, both OEM and aftermarket.

Parts are gonna be cheaper and easier to get for the 2.3 volvo then a 3.0, just asking?

DonS I am getting another 2.3 but no omc this time.Volvo Which from your advice and what I can research I can actually get parts for this one. I dont mind having an older boat that I have to work on as long as parts are available.

Yes, parts are readily available, both OEM and Aftermarket.
Here is also some ohter info in this thread. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=289501

I also have links to the OEM service manuals once you figure out what the real model number is and which drive it is.

Re: 87 Bayliner 19 ft

I'm on my second volvo and have had good luck with both. If it is the AQ125 like Don mentioned, I believe it is closed cooling system which has its benifits as well, I have never had one though.

The outdrives are very durable and reliable.

Definately a step up from your OMC.

Thanks guys for all the opinions and advice. Don S thanks for the link it looks like it will help. I will get back on the model number. I know it is not an omc drive though. Capt Mello I you are not the first person that ive heard that the outdrives are built like a tank. I feel like I made a better decision than the ford omc. thanks again guys
