I just finished installing a new waterpump kit, thermostat, and carburetor kit as well as a lower unit on a 1987 Evinrude 25hp that hasn't ran in about 10 years. I had to remove the starter assembly to be able to remove the carburetor. As an oversight I didn't fully tighten a ground on one of the posts on this assembly.

I have read elsewhere that it is detrimental to electrical systems to disconnect a running motor from the battery. Well this motor started right up after I finished all the assembly and ran rough as expected. As it was running I noticed the loose ground wire, shut it off and tightened the nut on the post. It started back up and ran pretty well considering it hasn't run in a very long time. This didn't last very long.

The motor shut off and would not restart. I checked both plugs for spark and had none. I went through all wires and traced the kill wires and everything looks fine. I am going to pull the flywheel off today to see if a bug has blocked the ignition. If I dont see anything out of the ordinary. I dont know what to do.

Please help with any suggestions as to what it could be. I think its very strange that it started and ran, then has no spark at all. Sorry for the long post and thanks for your help

Not so unusual for a motor that has been sitting. Coils can break down. Lots of stuff can happen.

Could even be a sheared crankshaft key. That's not uncommon, either, especially if someone had worked on the outboard before storing it.

You may well find your answer after pulling the flywheel. Let us know what you find.

Well, I got the flywheel off today and I think I may have found the root of my problem. There is what looks like a magneto/pickup coil that has oozed out its black tar-like innards. This got on the magnets inside the flywheel and was spread to this white plastic piece that has a metallic strip running vertically. What I wanna know is what part is what and could this be the cause of my problem. I've already cleaned off what was blocking the metal strip on the white box and I'm tempted to try it out to see if it runs. Here's a couple pictures.

I just reinstalled the flywheel and tried to get some spark after cleaning the tar substance off the magnets and the white box. Still nothing. Does this black tar leaking indicate a failure or is it common? Is it possible to test these parts and if so, does anybody have the correct specs? Anybody that's had a similar problem please offer your advice. Thanks a bunch.

Wow! For being a bunch of "experts" you guys are almost as helpful if I would have asked the same questions on a quilting forum.

Come on, surely somebody has some sort of knowledge they're willing to share.

EASY, EASY!!!! some people still have to work! That is the charge coil, and they're not supposed to leak. At least it's replaceable.

These folks give up a lot of time and patience, for free I might add, helping others with their problems, and they may send you off to a quilting forum for remarks like that. I surely hope you're just cutting up....

Re: 87 evinrude 25hp No Spark....Very Strange

First off I apologize for my haste and I thank you for your help and reply. I have been unsuccessful finding any information for those parts located under the flywheel. I was under the impression the two windings located on the same mount are the charge coils since they run to the regulator.

However, the other two (black box and white box) have wires running to the powerpack. This led me to believe they are part of the ignition system. Through deductive reasoning I thought the leaky part (which looks like a coil from any small engine) may have been the culprit. If I'm confused, please correct me.

Sorry if I'm a little anxious, but I'm sure you guys understand how I feel.

I found what I was looking for on ishopmarine.com. Very helpful, thanks. A friend has a powerpack that he's gonna let me have. Hopefully it will take care of the problem and I won't have to replace anything under the flywheel.

Thanks a bunch for your help, I'll keep you updated on the progress.
