I have a 87 evinrude 48 spl that I have rebuilt the carbs on 3 times I have replaced the fuel pump spark plugs and I have installed boysen Reed valves. I'm at a complete lost on what to do. I can get it to some what run with my hands over the carbs. And also at full choke it will rev rpms really high and die. It sounds like it missing also

Check flywheel key.-----Post compression numbers.-----How did it run before you attacked the carburetors and installed those magic reed valves ?

Well it was running amazing on the lake then out of no where it just died and the only way to get back to the truck was with the choke on.

Check the flywheel key.----Test compression.------Have a 94 model like that with a sheared key.----Oil / grease all over the tapers.----Club fisted individual who worked on it just did not have any outboard experience !!!

timing will be way off.----And it is a " no money spent " step for you to take.----Not saying it is sheared , but it needs to be checked !!----When the key is pushed in fuel goes into the intake manifold.-----This fuel bypasses the metering circuits in the carburetors.-----This suggest that there still may be issues with the carburetors.----But you say 3 times , so there.
