87 Force 125 fuel problem?

I own a 1987 Bayliner Capri 19' with a 125 Force outboard. I am not the best at maintenance but have kept it running well since 1992 when I bought it used. I've changed the plugs a few times, the impeller a couple of times, and the fuel line from the tank to the motor. Otherwise it's original. I think that it's not getting enough fuel at open throttle. At neutral at full throttle, it runs fine. From a stand still, it starts off fine full throttle, planes out, and gets to about 36-37mph. After about 10-15 seconds, it starts jerking, hesitating, and running rough. I have to back off to 1/2 throttle and run around 20mph. I can squeeze the primer bulb once or twice at this speed and it will pick up speed and run better. I can usually replace anything that is needed, I'm just not great at diagnostics. I ordered a fuel pump kit which was just the diaphragm and gaskets, not the valves. Needless to say, that didn't help any. Should I replace the valves in the fuel pump, fuel line from tank to motor again, or would it be more in the carbuetetors. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Yours is doing exactly what mine did - had be really worried!

I pulled the dip tube out of the fuel tank (the piece that the fuel pipe is connected to) and separated the aluminum tube from the brass fitting and there is a small screen in there that was completely clogged up with varnish. I literally had to chip it off - after that it ran like a champ!

I also replaced the fuel pump diaphragm, fuel line and added an inline filter and also replaced the needle valves in the carbs - none of which were actually causing a problem but made me feel good :)

Fill out the profile. You might be close to someone who can help.
Sounds like water in the fuel or the diaphram is bad.
Start with a compression/spark test. Then check all the hoses.Ethanol is messing with the rubber/plastic.The inline connectors go bad a suck air.J

He already told us that he had changed the diaphragm on the pump.

Water in the fuel - no way - it runs perfectly at part throttle.

Bad spark - again, no way - it runs perfectly at part throttle

Compression - no way - that doesn't cause a miss at high throttle

The fuel pump valves are unlikely to be the cause - as they are very simple and thus reliable and it's a 2 stage pump so 2 of the 3 would need to fail before it became dramatic.

It's obvious from the description of the problem that he is suffering from fuel starvation under high load. The only other option at this point would be timing that was waaay off - but that's unlikely as it would affect the first high load running for the first 10-15 seconds, which it doesn't.

Thanks for the advice. I will look at it this weekend. My work schedule doesn't have much room during the week. I will let you'll know the results as soon as I can.

Been away for a week and just got to your thread. Check the tank vent system for kinks or other obstruction (mud dauber nest) etc.

I own a fisher aluminum bass boat..21 footer..doing the same thing both of u guys described.. it does good about 20-25 MPH and then it chokes when i go faster..i tried a smaller portable tank closer to the engine to eliminate the possibility of restrictions from the original built-in tank..and it did the same thing but not as bad.. not to mention the primer bulb used to collapse.. which I replaced not making much difference..

Just a heads up. You can't resurrect an old post, If you can't find your specific issue just start a new thread. This forum is has a wealth of knowledge. Anyway welcome to iBoats.

Like Tom suggests start your own and include quotes from the older posts.
The connectors between the tank and pump could be leaking and sucking air.
The fuel pump diaphram bad?
What's the compression? Spark?
Location? Profile?
You might be close to someone who can help.
Ethanol fuel?
It melts the inside of older hoses making them collapse.???
